Pop — Joe’s father

Joe’s father and Marco’s grandfather

A veteran supporting role of wit, accountability and mortality, with a sustained confrontation at its heart.

Pop is the grandfather Marco adores and the father Joe has never forgiven. He dresses sharply, jokes freely and refuses to surrender his place in the family. An illness he has concealed makes the distance from his son increasingly urgent. His warmth is real, as are the failures Joe remembers. The actor has to let both histories occupy the same man.

Performance opportunity
The hospital conversation moves through humor, self-defense, accusation and the risk of admitting love. Pop must acknowledge what he did while recognizing the damage Joe is now doing. The role asks for an elder’s authority alongside the fear of leaving something unrepaired. A hand on Marco’s knee and the final game offer tenderness on a smaller scale. The contrast between a formidable verbal scene and a largely wordless ending creates a supporting-actor showcase with substantial emotional and awards potential.
